The Producer: Chelbesa is one of the washing stations of a company called SNAP, which was established in Addis Ababa in 2008 by coffee-passionate entrepreneur Negussie Debela. The company runs three coffee washing and processing stations in Chelelektu, Kochere District of the Gedeo Zone. Girum Assefa manages this washing station, and it buys cherries from approximately 470 farmers whose farms are, on average, between 0.5 to 2 hectares in size. As the washing station is located in the middle of the producers, the transportation of the picked cherries is easy to organize. SNAP coffee offers the farmers partnerships with washing station owners. The washing stations build schools, and SNAP Coffee provides computers and other facilities. They also construct roads to less accessible farming areas.
ABOUT POPULUS COFFEE
Populus Coffee was born in 2016 in Neukölln Berlin, and is a family business founded by Sari and Henrik Haavisto. Originally from Finland, coffee is a part of their DNA. They grew up with filter coffee all around them. In 2014, Henrik's background in journalism took him on a trip to Guatemala and Honduras, and it turned out to be a life-changing one. He got to experience the true beauty of specialty coffee: the relationship between people who share the same passion and work together for a common goal. From that trip, Populus Coffee also got its first and most long-lasting partnerships, as well as their name, which means people. To them, these relationships are the most important part of the trade.
